Web hosting made easy with Cpanel

Cpanel is a control panel for web hosting – it is used on a wide variety of web hosting systems on the world wide web. In fact, the majority of web hosting companies provide some version of the cpanel interface to make it easy for people to control the various functions of their web site and its hosting package. Cpanel gives you an interface for the common system software of a web server – it allows you to access your software on the web site through a control panel page which appears in your web browser. As a result, all you need is a web browser to connect to your control panel and make changes to your email configuration, your ftp server, your forum software, your database software, and just about anything else that you may need to change on your system.

For the most part, the cpanel software is used by commercial web hosting companies – there is also a license offered by the company which develops it, cPanel Inc., which lets individual users buy the software, but the most common situation in which you are likely to run into cpanel is when you buy a hosting package from a web hosting company and log into your account. Clicking on a control panel link will generally take you to some kind of installation of cpanel, or sometimes the cpanel page will be the first thing that comes up after you log in. The cpanel page will give you access to your email, ftp and all of the other features of your web site – while you can generally connect to your site using other programs (for example, a specialized FTP program might be better for you to take care of your file transfers), cpanel will work in a pinch and allow you to make changes from any place where you can connect to the world wide web.

Most of the time, cpanel is installed on a system which is running some variant of Linux – the cpanel software is compatible with such version of Linux as Fedora, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE, Mandriva and CentOS. It is also compatible with the FreeBSD operating system which developed from some of the same parent software. Other versions of Linux such as Debian may or may not provide compatibility (and are, in fact, likely to offer only partial compatibility). With the popularity of the cpanel system at the highest that it has ever been, and the vast majority of new web hosting companies including the cpanel software with their hosting solutions as a matter of course, the number of versions of cpanel is expected to increase and the number of features included with the software should continue to increase as well through various releases.

Cpanel is easy enough to use that practically anyone who signs up for a hosting package through the world wide web is able to figure out how to use is intuitively. There are also details on the specifics of cpanel’s operations online that you can look at if you run into trouble – just make sure that you are familiar with the basics of cpanel and you will easily be able to administrate your site!
