Infographics are becoming increasingly popular all over the Internet. But what exactly are they, and why are they so popular? Read on to find out.

In essence, infographics employ design elements to convey complex messages to readers/ viewers in a visually pleasing, compact and easy to understand manner. Typically consisting of visual (reference icons, graphics, colour coding), content (references, statistics, time frames) and knowledge (facts) elements, infographics are used to:

Communicate complex messages
Present data/ information in compact, easily understood ways
Analyse data to determine cause-effect relationships
Periodically monitor certain parameter routes

There are three 'Golden Rules' to creating infographics:

They must be accurate - any information that can not be verified should not be included
They should be easy to read and attractive - first impressions are everything. If viewers can't read provided information or are put off by the feel/ look of your infographic, they will not share it
They should report facts, tell a story and/ or convey a message in a way that is easily digested even by viewers with no previous knowledge of the topic

There are several reasons why infographics enjoy such high popularity, including:

Time saving - Infographics can be created quicker than a set of articles/ blog posts, and they can be read/ understood quicker than full blogs

Traffic - Infographics are viral magnets. Viewers are nine times more likely to share attractive, clever infographics via social media 'likes'/ 'tweets' than any other content. This, of course, will create significantly increased 'social signals' - something simply adored by Google - and subsequently drive more traffic to your site.

Brand Awareness - Infographics that go viral dramatically increase awareness of your brand across global audiences. What's more, clever and attractive infographic will represent your brand/ company as forward thinking and innovative - making you stand out among competitors.
